What Are Astrological Aspects, and Why Do They Matter?
The angles between planets are where most of the actual interpretation happens. Here's what an aspect is, and how to read the ones on today's transit report.
Look at The Stars Today on any given day and you'll see a list under "Notable Aspects" -- things like "Venus is flowing smoothly with Jupiter" or "Mars is in tension with Saturn." These aren't poetic flourishes. An aspect is a measurable angle between two planets, as seen from Earth, and it's one of the most concrete tools astrology has.
The angle is the whole idea
Every planet sits somewhere along the ecliptic -- the flat, roughly circular path the Sun, Moon, and planets appear to trace against the background sky. At any moment, you can measure the angular distance between two planets along that path, in degrees, from 0° to 180°. That number is the aspect.
Certain angles get names because they recur often enough, and because astrologers have historically treated them as meaningfully different from the angles in between:
- Conjunction (0°) -- two planets sit at roughly the same point. Their energies blend or amplify each other.
- Sextile (60°) -- a supportive, low-friction angle.
- Square (90°) -- a tense angle, historically read as friction or a push to act.
- Trine (120°) -- an easy, flowing angle, often read as things working smoothly.
- Opposition (180°) -- two planets directly across from each other, read as a pull between two things.
None of these angles are exact very often -- planets are constantly moving at different speeds, so a perfect 90.000° square is rare. Instead, astrologers work with an "orb," a margin of degrees on either side of the exact angle that still counts as the aspect being active. A tighter orb (say, 1-2°) is read as a stronger, more precise version of the aspect; a wider orb (6-8°) is weaker and more diffuse.
Why the orb number matters
On this site, every aspect listed includes its orb -- the smaller that number, the closer the two planets are to the exact angle. An aspect at 0.3° orb is about as precise as it gets; one at 7° is on its way out, or just arriving. This is also why aspects come and go gradually rather than switching on and off: as planets move, they slide into range of an angle, sit close to exact for a period, and then drift back out.
Why some aspects matter more than others
Not every planet pair carries equal weight. The Moon moves roughly 13° per day, so it forms and drops aspects constantly -- a Moon aspect might be exact for a few hours. The outer planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) move so slowly that an aspect between two of them can stay in a tight orb for weeks or months, which is part of why generational or "big picture" astrological themes tend to get traced to slow-moving planet pairs rather than the faster inner ones.
Aspects involving the Sun or Moon also tend to get more attention in daily horoscope writing, simply because they're the two bodies every sun-sign horoscope is anchored to.
Reading an aspect in practice
When you see "Mercury is in tension with Neptune, square, orb 2.1°" on the transits page, that's a real, computed angular relationship, not a stock phrase. What it means in practice is genuinely a matter of interpretation -- astrology's aspect meanings (harmony, tension, flow) are traditional, not astronomical facts. What's not up for interpretation is the angle itself: it's the same number an astronomer would calculate, and it's recomputed fresh from planetary positions every day.
