Ecliptic
The apparent path the Sun traces across the sky over a year, as seen from Earth -- the backbone the entire zodiac is measured against.
The ecliptic is the plane of Earth's orbit around the Sun, projected onto the sky -- in practice, the line the Sun appears to travel along over the course of a year. It's called that because eclipses can only happen when the Moon crosses this exact line.
The zodiac's twelve signs are simply twelve 30° divisions of the ecliptic. Every planetary position discussed on this site -- "Mars in Gemini," "the Sun at 14.5° Leo" -- is a position measured along the ecliptic, not some other arbitrary line in the sky.
