The zodiac wheel is the ecliptic (the Sun's apparent yearly path) divided into twelve equal sections of 30° each, one per sign, starting from the spring equinox point at 0° Aries. Every placement in astrology -- a sun sign, a planet's transit position, an aspect between two points -- is ultimately just a location or an angle somewhere on this wheel.
Because the wheel is evenly divided, distances between signs translate directly into the named aspects: 2 signs apart is always a sextile, 4 signs apart is always a trine, and so on.
