Waxing & Waning
Waxing means the Moon's illuminated portion is growing toward full; waning means it's shrinking back toward new.
These two words describe direction, not a specific phase. Waxing covers everything from New Moon growing toward Full (Waxing Crescent, then Waxing Gibbous, on either side of the First Quarter). Waning covers the shrink back from Full toward New (Waning Gibbous, then Waning Crescent, on either side of the Last Quarter).
A simple way to remember it: waxing is "growing," waning is "shrinking" -- and both terms are always paired with how illuminated the Moon currently is.
