Modality
One of three groupings -- Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable -- describing a sign's role within its season: starting it, sustaining it, or closing it out.
Alongside element, every sign also has a modality. Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) open each of the four seasons. Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) fall in the settled middle of a season. Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) fall at a season's transitional close.
This grouping maps directly onto the solar year: the four cardinal signs begin exactly at the equinoxes and solstices. Modality is also directly behind the square aspect -- any two signs a square apart always share a modality without sharing an element, which is exactly why the friction reads as two similar approaches colliding.
