Aspects

Square

Two points 90° apart on the zodiac -- a tension aspect, traditionally read as friction that pushes action.

A square is a 90° separation -- a quarter of the full circle. It's traditionally the classic "tension" aspect: the two points involved are close enough to interact constantly but don't share an underlying temperament, which is read as friction.

On the Compatibility pages, a square between two signs means they share a modality (both are natural starters, or both natural stabilizers, or both natural adapters) without sharing an element -- which is exactly why the friction reads as two similar approaches colliding, rather than two opposite approaches simply missing each other.
