Element
One of four groupings -- Fire, Earth, Air, Water -- that every zodiac sign belongs to, three signs each.
Every sign is assigned one of four classical elements: Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius), or Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces). It's one of the oldest organizing ideas in Western astrology, grouping the twelve signs into four sets of three that share a broad temperament.
Element is also directly behind two of the five aspects: any two signs a trine apart always share an element, and any two signs in opposition always have complementary elements. See each sign's own page, and the Four Elements article, for more.
