A trine is a 120° separation -- a third of the full circle. It's traditionally read as the smoothest, most naturally harmonious aspect, and there's a concrete reason why: any two points exactly 120° apart on the zodiac always share the same element (Fire, Earth, Air, or Water).
That shared temperament is why trines are read as effortless rather than as something that has to be worked at. The tradeoff, also frequently noted, is that trines can be under-critical -- with nothing to push back, momentum can build unchecked.
